The writer confuses racism and prejudice/bias. Racism is a complex issue, beyond the race based bias. It is a system that needs addressing for young people, one step at a time. The other thing I disliked about this book is that it seems to honor namecalling, rather than talking about acts of racism.

I found it disturbing that 'race' was named as a basis for family, as today we have families of mixed race.

I wish I could have liked it, but I now live in fear that there will be people who think that this teaches about racism. I do not agree that it does. There is another book with this name and I will look at it. As to 'race', a good book exists by Julius Lester, a writer of African heritage who also writes for adults. I think his basis - that we each have a story - may provide a beginning language to build on when the topic of racism needs to be addressed. I also think that perhaps a book on racism is not needed as much as an approach to the conversation. I'm part of a Quaker group looking at this issue, exploring many church perspectives as well as books.

I'm grateful you have this blog!!

Joan Gunn Broadfieldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12755651726493688953noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912649234542008452.post-37847682494979463342015-11-16T13:06:39.152-05:002015-11-16T13:06:39.152-05:00I was happy to see Lulu acquire an African-America...I was happy to see Lulu acquire an African-American friend in the new book Ladybug girl and the Best Ever Playdate by David Soman and Jacky DavisAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912649234542008452.post-70795736443661284672015-09-04T23:07:57.057-04:002015-09-04T23:07:57.057-04:00Thanks, Meredith. Your book sounds really fascinating.

I also experience that getting diverse books to the audiences that want them remains extremely challenging these days - including once they're published. And if they don't sell, then publishers can't afford to keep putting these significant books out. Several people have noted that not only do We Need Diverse Books, but We Need Diverse Book SALES.

Kirsten Cappy and I have been having conversations about - and a tiny bit of preliminary success in locating - alternative sources of purchasing for books that need to get into the hands of children. For instance, encourage companies who want to give to the community to purchase large quantities and donate them to schools. See the link to her article on the topic on brown Bookshelf, in my "Black lives Matter" post: http://coloringbetween.blogspot.com/2015/07/black-lives-matter.html It's an important idea.

We definitely need outside-the-box thinking, in all directions, to turn this ship around!
Best of luck with your work,
Annie

Anne Sibley O'Brienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07084188995698656091noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912649234542008452.post-46376240072234919602015-09-01T12:04:30.573-04:002015-09-01T12:04:30.573-04:00As someone who uses her work to portray different ...As someone who uses her work to portray different ethnicities, ages, races and even species (I like a lot of animals in my work) the hardest thing for me is figuring how to get my work before people who would be interested in it. Duke Day For Annie has historical as well as as the empirical importance and impact you speak of (Ann was friends with Duke Ellington, and grew up to be the first certified African American schoolteacher in Maine. It also shows a little known or portrayed aspect of African American history in a high interest place and time- Old Orchard Beach c. 1938). I agree the books need to be reflective, but with books like The Rabbit Who Wanted To Sleep sucking up oxygen and getting attention finding media outlets that actually reflect people's concerns and make up will be another challenge.
